Y: The Last Man - Unmanned

Title: Y: The Last Man - Unmanned
Author: Brian K. Vaughan
Genre: Graphic Novel
Page Count: 127
Why I read it: graphic novel challenge
Grade: A

In the summer of 2002, a plague of unknown origin destroyed every last sperm, fetus, and fully developed mammal with a Y chromosome--with the apparent exception of one young man and his male pet. This "gendercide" instantaneously exterminated 48% of the global population, or approximately 2.9 billion men.
Now, aided by the mysterious Agent 355, the last human male Yorick Brown must contend with dangerous extremists, a hoped-for reunion with a girlfriend on the other side of the globe, and the search for exactly why he's the only man to survive.

My review:
This graphic novel was great!  I really loved the artwork, which is perhaps my favorite part of graphic novels.  I think I like the more realistic look, and this one had it.  The story was wonderful, too, and I'm excited to read more in this series.  It's the type of story that, when I finish reading, I can't stop thinking about.  What if all the men on Earth died?  What would the world be like?  I'm thinking of all the jobs out there that are mostly done by males.  Things like construction workers, garbage truck drivers, etc.  Women would have to step into those roles.  It's very interesting to think about, and normally graphic novels really don't have me thinking beyond when I close that last page.

I would recommend this one, for sure.

  1. There are a lot of men's roles or jobs I wouldn't want to tackle. A world without men? Awful -- they provide a great balance.

    Very interesting! Thank you.

  2. How funny that you should post about this! I was clicking random links on Booking Through Thursday and came across yours-- I filled mine out, and I actually mentioned this series in my entry. I got a gift card for Christmas and used it to buy the last couple of volumes. Definitely worth it!

It's an excellent graphic novel. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so! :)

    I'll be back!

  3. I've got the second one from the library. Can't wait to read it!
