The Thief

Title: The Thief
Author: Megan Whalen Turner
Genre: YA Fantasy
Page Count: 280
Why I read it: book blogger recommended
Grade: C

Synopsis:
The king's scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king's prison. The magus is interested only in the thief's abilities.
What Gen is interested in is anyone's guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses.

My review:
After reading the description for this book, I really thought I'd like it a lot better than I did.  For most of this book, I was quite bored, and felt like I wanted to skim, but since it isn't that long of a book, I didn't.

There were some parts of the book that were okay.  Some parts where I glimpsed that the author could really write some good stuff that kept me engaged as a reader, but for the most part, I didn't really care what happened.  I didn't care about the characters.  I didn't really understand the motivation for them stealing the treasure, or why I should care.

I didn't hate the book, but I can't imagine wanting to continue with the series, unless the other books are vastly different.  This one just wasn't for me.

  1. I'm sorry you didn't like it very much. Although, I will say that the other two books in the series ARE completely different. That's what I always tell people when I'm recommending it. You can't read them without reading THIEF but your reaction to THIEF is not really a good indicator of what you'll think of the rest of the series. So I recommend giving QUEEN a shot and if you're not sucked in in the first 100 pages then call it a wash. :)

  2. I'll probably give it a try at some point. The synopsis sounds good, and I read a few reviews that made it sound good. I'm willing to try just about anything. :)
