Book Review: Student Bodies

When I saw Student Bodies on Netgalley, all I remembered was that I had read the first book in the series, and figured I might as well read the second. I started reading it before coming to Goodreads to find that I did not, in fact, really like the first book. But I had already started, and it wasn't super long, so I figured I might as well just finish it.

I liked this one even less than Poltergeeks. The writing seems like it's written for middle grade, at best, but the subject matter isn't middle grade. I hate to give an all bad review, so I will leave it at that. I'm sure there will be readers out there who will enjoy this, it just isn't for me. I will definitely not be continuing on with this series, which is pretty much what I said after the first book. Please don't let me forget again!

Book Review: Poltergeeks

15-year-old Julie Richardson is about to learn that being the daughter of a witch isn't all it's cracked up to be. When she and her best friend, Marcus, witness an elderly lady jettisoned out the front door of her home, it's pretty obvious to Julie there's a supernatural connection.

In fact, there's a whisper of menace behind increasing levels of poltergeist activity all over town. After a large-scale paranormal assault on Julie's high school, her mother falls victim to the spell Endless Night. Now it's a race against time to find out who is responsible or Julie won't just lose her mother's soul, she'll lose her mother's life.

This book was about as average as you can get. There was nothing particularly memorable, nothing really different. And it wasn't horrible either. I didn't hate it while I was reading it. I just feel very blah about it overall. I think I'll have forgotten the whole thing in a few days.

Julie is an okay heroine. I guess she was a typical teenager, with a bit of magic thrown in. Of course there was the obligatory YA romance. Complete with teenage angst about feelings.  It was definitely better than the usual love triangle, though, for sure. 

Mostly, though, I'd say it was a quick read and something to pass the time if you don't have anything else to to read. It's pretty predictable, and nothing great, but I've definitely read worse. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, I know. I probably wouldn't read more if this is a series.  Too many other books out there.
